Chem Chem sits in the Burunge Wildlife Management Area, between Tarangire National Park and Lake Manyara, and calls itself the birthplace of the slow safari. Tented suites of canvas, wood and stone are linked by raised walkways across palm-dotted plains.
This is big-game country, explored on foot as much as by vehicle, with Yoga, walking safaris, photographic hides and sundowners from a lookout deck.
How to get there: fly into Kilimanjaro or Arusha, then take a short light-aircraft flight to the nearest airstrip.
